The Delinquent Season Premiere at ADIFF18

Yesterday was the so much awaited (by me at least!) world premiere of The Delinquent Season. The feature directorial debut from acclaimed Irish playwright Mark O’Rowe hits Irish cinemas, this Friday 27 April. There was a Q&A after the film for the lucky ones who got to be there to see it first hand. There were mixed opinions about the film on twitter, some people liked it, like The Pesky Blunders, who wrote:

“#TheDelinquentSeason was great. Dialogue based rather than action, it examines 2 couples’ disintegrating relationships without judging them even when they behave very badly. Flashes of humour too. Very reminiscent of Eric Rohmer at his best. Catch it when you can.”

Some others were not so kind, such as Darren Mooney, who reviewed the film (link below), thought it was pretty boring. Here’s a quote from his article:

“The issue is not that the central characters of The Delinquent Season are self-absorbed or self-obsessed, that they are selfish and manipulative. The issue is that they are boring. The four central characters in The Delinquent Season never develop beyond familiar archetypes, never achieving anything resembling complexity or nuance. The characters in The Delinquent Season are unlikable, but they are unlikable in completely banal ways. However provocative the script might be, it cannot transcend that fundamental flaw.”

And he wrote this on his Twitter account:
“Finished up #ADIFF18 with The Delinquent Season. A somewhat underwhelming finale, an overextended stage play grappling with provocative ideas that it can only articulate through contrivance.”

Alexandra (@alex_libris) also didn’t like it much and agreed with him:

“I fully agree with your review… My partner and I decided to leave before it was over. The Delinquent Season attempted to portray everyday life, and ended up being mundane and flat. A real shame. #TheDelinquentSeason @DublinFilmFest”

I am absolutely DYING to watch it myself to know if it’s great or boring. I find it quite hard thinking something with Andrew will be boring, but… you never know. According to Cillian Murphy, there are no other release dates confirmed for The Delinquent Season outside of Ireland at the moment but hopefully there will be a UK release date at some point and the rest of the world too.

During the red carpet, Andrew said some very nice things about the film, such as “The victim of betrayal isn’t necessarily the victim of the relationship” and “In movies you explore falling in love… our job is not to judge the characters” on the first reading the script.

There were some people who loved the song in the trailer and wanted to know which song was that, it has been revealed that Ryan McMullan and Ed Sheeran are responsible for it and the name of the song is “In this Room”. The song personally annoyed me a bit, but a lot of people enjoyed it, so now you know!
