Olivier Awards 2018
I have no words to describe my feelings about this award ceremony. They completely snubbed Hamlet. The world has seen this play through BBC and a lot of people were mesmerized at Andrew’s performance. Andrew memorized more than 500 lines and he delivered them as if they were completely new and fresh. And he did that 150 times!
Hamlet is usually delivered in a very stiff and pompous manner and Andrew changed that. He humanized it and made it relatable. I never really saw myself having anything in common with Hamlet until I watched Andrew’s emotions when hugging his father’s ghost when he first saw him. That is the way I would hug my father if I had the chance to see him again. And this is what Andrew did with this play, he made Hamlet human like you and me, not just a prince from centuries ago. I think this is one hell of a feat.
I know all actors in this category are great, but nothing can top Andrew’s performance as Hamlet, nothing, even if I haven’t seen them. This play is 3 hours and a half long, he is in almost every scene, it must have been so exhausting, demanding. I cannot imagine how emotionally draining it must have been for him, crying and feeling all those emotions every single time… So nothing can convince me that anything can top that! This was something special, memorable and even the BBC acknowledged that by airing the show so that everyone from the whole world could see this. This was a very special and amazing project. Everyone involved deserved their recognition.
So I am very pissed off. I feel that after all effort and brilliance, Andrew, Robert Icke and everyone involved in the production deserved to have their effort and talent rewarded in a way that the industry and peers would remember. I am sure that Andrew himself must be a lot more gracious and ok with this result, but I am not. I think they were robbed.
I feel like ignoring this award thing entirely, just like they did with Hamlet, but Andrew looked so glamorous that I must post the pictures from the event….
